Are you turning 60, or have you already reached this milestone? Do you ever wonder what this stage of life might look like? I recently turned 60, and it got me thinking about whether this could actually be the best time of life. What if aging isn’t something to fear, but something to look forward to?
My Life Before 60
My life has gone through many different chapters, and each decade brought something different.
I immigrated to the United States when I was 10. During my teenage years, I spent a lot of time helping my parents as we worked to make ends meet.
In my 20s, I was still trying to find myself. I went through a lot of self-discovery and got married in my mid-20s.
My 30s were busy. I was running a business while raising my two daughters, and money was often tight. In my 40s, I became a single mother while continuing to run my business and raise my girls.
My 50s brought another major change. I got married again, but that marriage ended soon afterward. It was a difficult period, but it also became the beginning of some of the biggest changes in my life.
Eventually, I decided to simplify my life. I sold almost everything I owned and left my job. For the first time, I began creating a life based more on what I wanted rather than what I felt I needed to do.
Looking back, I can see that every decade brought me somewhere new. But it wasn’t until my 60s that I finally felt like I had arrived.
When Is the Best Time of Life?
Many people look back on their younger years as the best time of life. They remember being young, having more energy, and perhaps having fewer physical limitations. It’s easy to assume that getting older means losing the things that made life enjoyable.
But being young doesn’t automatically make those years better. Every stage of life has its advantages and challenges. Youth may bring more physical energy, while later years can bring greater self-awareness and a better understanding of what truly matters.
Health also plays an important role in enjoying life at any age. Taking care of yourself can help you stay active and continue doing the things you enjoy as you get older. Good health can make a big difference in how you experience your later years.
For me, the best time of life is now. Not because everything is perfect, but because I can appreciate what I have while still looking forward to what’s ahead.
What I Value Now
At this time of my life, I’ve become much clearer about what matters to me. I don’t need a busy life or a long list of accomplishments to feel fulfilled. Instead, I appreciate the things that bring me genuine happiness and make my days feel meaningful.
I value experiences more than things. Traveling, exploring new places, and spending time outdoors bring me much more satisfaction than having more possessions. I also value simple moments that don’t cost anything. A good conversation, a long walk, or having a day with nowhere I need to be can mean just as much to me as something more exciting.
I value my health, too. Staying active and taking care of myself have become a priority because I want to enjoy the years ahead. Being healthy gives me the ability to do the things I enjoy and live the kind of life I want.
I also appreciate having choices. I don’t need every day to look the same, and I don’t need to follow a particular routine just because that’s what I’m supposed to do. Some days can be productive, while others can simply be enjoyable.
At this time of my life, I value quality over quantity. I want fewer things that matter more, fewer obligations that drain me, and more experiences that make me happy.
More Time, More Freedom
One of the biggest surprises about this stage of my life is how little I need to feel content.
I don’t own many possessions, and I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. In fact, having less has made my life much simpler. Simplifying my life has helped me spend less time maintaining things and more time enjoying the things that matter to me.
That simplicity has given me a different kind of freedom. I can do what I want, when I want, without having to worry about fitting everything around a long list of obligations.
I don’t take this freedom for granted. Having the time and flexibility to choose how I spend my days feels like one of the greatest luxuries of my life.
Making the Most of This Time in Life
Turning 60 has made me realize that I don’t need to have everything figured out to enjoy my life. I can simply appreciate where I am and remain open to what comes next.
I don’t know exactly what the coming years will bring, but that doesn’t worry me. In fact, I’m excited to find out. There are still places I want to see, things I want to experience, and new memories I want to make.
Maybe the best time of life isn’t a particular age at all. Perhaps it’s the time when you finally feel at peace with who you are and excited about what’s still ahead.
