When it comes to enjoying a good hike or trail run, Blue Ridge loop in Stebbins Cold Canyon in Winters is a gem that’s truly special to me. I’ve been exploring the challenging 5-mile Blue Ridge loop for about 15 years. Each visit still feels like a new adventure, and the beauty of the trail never grows old.

With its varied landscape and the refreshing water creeks, Stebbins Cold Canyon provides a perfect escape from the everyday hustle. Once you discover Stebbins Cold Canyon, it’s hard to stay away. Its challenging path, while demanding, is incredibly rewarding. It offers a sense of accomplishment and a chance to experience the raw beauty of the California foothills.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone looking for a new challenge, the Blue Ridge hiking trail in Stebbins Cold Canyon has a way of drawing you back time and time again.
Stebbins Cold Canyon: A Trail of Memories and Renewal
Stebbins Cold Canyon feels like an old friend, always ready to offer a great workout and a breath of fresh air. It’s my go-to spot for recharging, both physically and emotionally. The challenging Blue Ridge Loop keeps me on my toes and pushes my limits, helping me stay in top shape.
This trail also holds deep personal meaning for me. It’s where we scattered my ex-husband’s ashes, as it was one of our favorite hiking spots. Each step on this path brings back cherished memories of the good times we shared. It’s a place of solace and reflection, where the beauty of nature blends with the warmth of precious moments.
The Perfect Hiking Trail for a Challenge
The 5-mile Blue Ridge Loop is my favorite trail because it offers a good challenge without being too long. You can complete it in less than few hours, making it perfect for a refreshing morning adventure. It’s also great for trail running, which is a passion of mine, and the terrain is ideal for it.
If you’re up for more, you can extend the loop to 8 miles by adding Annie’s Loop. This extra distance gives you amazing views of Lake Berryessa. Whether you stick to the original 5-mile loop or go for the extended 8-mile option, Stebbins Cold Canyon has something for everyone.
Skipping the Graffiti Tunnel
There’s one thing to be aware of with the Stebbins Cold Canyon hiking trail. Right at the start, you’ll pass through a tunnel covered in graffiti. Personally, I find this spot a bit unsettling.
To avoid it, I park in the smaller lot located above the tunnel. If you park in the larger lot near the porta-potty, you’ll eventually come across this tunnel. To skip it, take the left turn before reaching the tunnel and head up to the smaller parking area.
Despite this minor detail, don’t let it deter you. The tunnel is just a small part of the hike. The rest of the trail is beautiful and well worth the experience.
Sun Tips for Hiking Stebbins Cold Canyon
The views on the Blue Ridge hiking trail are amazing. As you hike, you’ll see gorgeous panoramas of the Sacramento Valley and Lake Berryessa. The trail also has beautiful wildflowers that add to the scenery.
However, there’s one important thing to remember, especially in summer. The sun in California can be very hot, and the trail has little shade. To stay safe and enjoy your hike, bring sun protection like sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
Also, make sure to carry plenty of water to stay hydrated. With these preparations, you can enjoy the stunning views and the beauty of the trail while staying cool and comfortable.
Best Times and Routes for Hiking Blue Ridge Trail
For the best hiking experience, visit Stebbins Cold Canyon in the fall or spring when the weather is pleasant. If you want to hike in the summer, try to arrive early—before 8:30 AM—to avoid the heat.
When you start the hike, remember there are two starting points. If you choose the left side, be ready for a steeper climb. Many hikers go the other way to avoid this challenge, but if you like a tough workout, starting on the left can be rewarding.
Why? Starting on the left means a gradual downhill on your way back, which is great for trail running. It’s not only a good workout but also adds extra fun to your hike. Whether you want a tough climb or an exciting run, Stebbins Cold Canyon has something for you.
