For years, Indonesia had been on my travel wish list. When I finally had the opportunity to visit, my Indonesia adventures were filled with breathtaking sunrises, volcanic landscapes, and beautiful natural scenery. From Bali to East Java, every stop offered something unique.
Here are the highlights from my journey.
Indonesia Adventures Begin in Ubud, Bali
After arriving in Bali, I headed to Ubud, a town known for its lush landscapes, traditional culture, and relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect place to begin my adventures in Indonesia. It also provided a welcome change of pace from the busier areas often associated with Bali.
I stayed at Ayu Homestay, a cozy family-run accommodation tucked away from the crowds. Although simple, it was comfortable, affordable, and offered a warm local experience. Each morning started with a delicious homemade breakfast, which quickly became one of my favorite parts of the stay.
What I enjoyed most about Ubud was its peaceful setting. Narrow paths, tropical greenery, and quiet neighborhoods made it easy to slow down and appreciate the surroundings. The town also served as an excellent base for exploring many of Bali’s natural and cultural attractions.
With several days ahead of me, I was excited to discover what made Ubud one of Bali’s most popular destinations.
Exploring Ubud's Natural and Cultural Treasures
One of the reasons I chose Ubud Bali was the variety of experiences available within a short distance of town. From cultural sites to scenic landscapes, every day offered something different and helped make my Indonesia adventures even more memorable.
My first stop was the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, where hundreds of long-tailed macaques roam freely among ancient temples and towering trees. While the monkeys were entertaining to watch, I also enjoyed walking through the peaceful forest and admiring the beautiful surroundings.
Another highlight was visiting the famous rice terraces. The vibrant green fields stretched across the hillsides, creating some of the most picturesque scenery I saw during my Indonesia travel experience. I also spent time exploring the Sweet Orange Walk, a peaceful trail that winds through rice fields and quiet countryside away from the busier tourist areas.
In addition to exploring Ubud’s natural beauty, I visited several temples and waterfalls that offered a glimpse into Bali’s rich culture and landscape. For a little extra excitement, I even joined an ATV adventure that took me through muddy trails, tropical scenery, and areas I would not have discovered on my own.
These Bali highlights gave me a wonderful introduction to the island before continuing my journey to East Java.
Indonesia Adventures Continue in East Java
After exploring Bali, I continued my Indonesia adventures with a trip to East Java. The scenery began to change as I left the island behind, and I quickly discovered a quieter side of Indonesia that felt very different from the popular tourist areas.
During my stay, I chose Didu’s Homestay, a charming property with cozy bungalows surrounded by greenery. The accommodations were comfortable, welcoming, and surprisingly affordable. In fact, I found many prices in Indonesia to be very similar to those in Vietnam, making it an excellent destination for budget-conscious travelers.
One of the things I enjoyed most about East Java was its relaxed atmosphere. Life seemed to move at a slower pace, and the smaller towns offered a glimpse into everyday life beyond Bali’s tourist centers. The friendly locals and peaceful surroundings made it easy to settle in and enjoy the experience.
East Java is best known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, and I was about to visit two of the region’s most famous natural attractions. The adventure was just beginning.
Hiking to the Spectacular Ijen Crater
The hike to Ijen Crater was steady and manageable, but reaching the top felt incredibly rewarding. As daylight slowly appeared, the landscape came into view and revealed one of the most unique sights I had ever seen. The crater’s turquoise-colored lake stood out against the rugged volcanic terrain, creating a scene that almost looked unreal.
What made the experience even more memorable was the atmosphere. Watching the changing colors of the sky while standing near one of Indonesia’s most famous volcanoes was something I will never forget. The cool mountain air and dramatic scenery made the early start feel insignificant once I reached the viewpoint.
Of all my Indonesia adventures, Ijen Crater was one of the most unique experiences. The turquoise crater lake and dramatic volcanic scenery created a landscape unlike anything I had seen before.
Indonesia Adventures at Mount Bromo
The morning began well before dawn as I climbed into a jeep and headed toward one of the area’s popular viewpoints. As the sky slowly brightened, the landscape began to reveal itself. Layers of mountains emerged from the darkness, while a sea of clouds stretched across the valley below. Watching the sunrise over Mount Bromo was easily one of the most breathtaking moments of my trip.
After sunrise, the adventure continued with a jeep ride across the Sea of Sand. The vast volcanic plain felt almost otherworldly, with dramatic scenery in every direction. It was unlike anything I had experienced before and quickly became one of the highlights of my Indonesia adventures.
One of the unexpected joys of the day was meeting two local young women who were also exploring the area. We spent part of the excursion together, sharing stories and enjoying the experience. Sometimes the people you meet while traveling become just as memorable as the places you visit.
By the end of the day, I understood why Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most iconic destinations. The combination of stunning scenery, adventure, and unexpected connections made it quite an experience.
Why Indonesia Left a Lasting Impression
Indonesia had been on my travel wish list for years, and it was well worth the wait. What stood out most was the incredible diversity packed into a relatively small area. One day I was hiking alongside volcanic landscapes, and the next I was exploring rice terraces, waterfalls, and cultural sites.
The trip offered a perfect balance of adventure, scenery, and local experiences. More importantly, it left me with memories that will stay with me long after the journey ended.
If given the opportunity, I would gladly return to explore even more of this fascinating country.
