My Trip to Vietnam

My trip to Vietnam

Vietnam had always been on my travel list, and this trip was finally my chance to experience it. After a week in Busan, South Korea, I continued my 58-day journey across Asia with two unforgettable weeks in Vietnam.

I started with five nights in the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City, where history and modern life collided in the most fascinating way. Then, I slowed down with three nights in the coastal town of Vung Tau, soaking in its laid-back charm. Finally, I spent five relaxing nights on the stunning island of Phu Quoc, a tropical paradise that felt like the perfect ending to my time in Vietnam.

This was my first visit, and I had high expectations from everything I’d heard. But nothing could have prepared me for the experiences I had. Vietnam was more than I imagined, full of vibrant energy, breathtaking landscapes, and moments I’ll never forget.

Beautiful, Affordable, and Welcoming

Vietnam is a beautiful country with a rich culture and welcoming people, making it an exciting destination for travelers. While I did come across a few rude individuals at the airport, most people I met were kind and friendly. The culture is a vibrant mix of tradition and modern life, reflected in the flavorful street food, colorful festivals, and unique customs.

During my trip, I was amazed by Vietnam’s stunning landscapes—from lush rice terraces to breathtaking beaches. As a developing country, some areas may feel a bit rough around the edges, but this only adds to its charm, showcasing the resilience and resourcefulness of its people. The best part? Vietnam is very affordable, much like Thailand, making it easy to explore and enjoy without overspending.

For vegans, Vietnam is truly a paradise! My local guide mentioned that around 25% of the population follows a vegetarian or vegan diet, which means plant-based options are everywhere. From small eateries to dedicated vegan restaurants, it’s easy to find delicious and satisfying meals wherever you go.

Vietnam's Busy Motorbike Culture

Vietnam has a unique and vibrant transportation system, with motorbikes being the most popular way to get around. Both locals and tourists use them to navigate the busy streets, and it’s common to see sidewalks filled with parked motorbikes. Tourists often rent motorbikes for about $6 a day, but ride-hailing apps like Grab offer a convenient alternative.

Surprisingly, I didn’t witness any accidents, as people seem skilled at avoiding them. However, crossing the streets can be chaotic due to the high number of motorbikes. Drivers often don’t stop for pedestrians, so it’s important to stay alert and cross carefully. This bustling traffic creates a lively atmosphere, and while it may feel intimidating at first, you quickly learn to navigate the streets like a local.

Busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City

My First Stop: Ho Chi Minh City

I began my trip in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a vibrant place that was truly captivating. I stayed at a nice hostel called Meander Saigon, where the friendly staff made my experience even better. Although I spent five nights here, four nights in one location is just the right amount of time to see nearly everything. Here are some of the highlights I enjoyed:

1. War Remnants Museum

One of the most significant parts of my trip to Vietnam was the War Remnants Museum. This museum offered a powerful and eye-opening experience, providing insight into Vietnam’s history and the lasting impact of the war. It was also a moving reminder of the resilience of the Vietnamese people.

2. Exploring the City

Food tour in Ho Chi Minh City

Although I’m not typically a city person, I found myself enjoying the lively chaos of Ho Chi Minh City. The streets were filled with more motorbikes than I had ever seen! To kick-start my adventure, I took a motorbike ride from the airport to my hostel. This ride was thrilling and gave me a firsthand taste of the city’s energy.

During my stay, I also went on a food tour on a motorbike. This was one of the highlights of my trip. It allowed me to taste a variety of delicious local dishes that reflect the rich flavors of Vietnamese cuisine. I also visited the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral and explored other historical buildings.

3. Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels Tour

Mekong Delta River in Vietnam

The best part of my trip to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was undoubtedly the one-day tour of the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels. This tour included an incredible canoe ride through the lush waterways of the Mekong Delta.

Before we set out on the Mekong Delta, we explored the Cu Chi Tunnels. This part of the tour was fascinating, as it offered a glimpse into the ingenious tactics used during the war. Overall, this tour was by far the best I have ever experienced, combining adventure with a rich educational experience.

Trip to Vung Tau, Vietnam: A Relaxing Beach Getaway

After Ho Chi Minh City, I made a trip to Vung Tau, Vietnam, a charming beach town that provided a peaceful escape. Known for its beautiful beaches and laid-back atmosphere, this small town is the perfect spot for relaxation. I stayed at a cute boutique hotel called La Casa Hotel, which added to the overall charm of my visit. I spent two full days here, which was just the right amount of time.

However, if you prefer a shorter visit, you can easily take a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City, as it’s only a few hours by bus.

Hon Ba Island in Vung Tau

1. Beach Walks

One of my favorite activities in Vung Tau was simply walking along the beach. The soft sand and gentle waves created a serene environment that was perfect for unwinding. I enjoyed strolling along the shoreline, listening to the sound of the ocean. The beach was not too crowded, which allowed for a calm and pleasant experience.

2. Hon Ba Island

I also took a trip to Hon Ba Island, a small island near the front and back beaches of Vung Tau. This island is home to a beautiful temple, which I found fascinating. The temple was serene and offered stunning views of the surrounding sea. Visiting Hon Ba Island felt like stepping into a peaceful retreat, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Trip to Phu Quoc, Vietnam

My last stop in Vietnam was Phu Quoc, and I absolutely loved this place! It turned out to be my favorite part of my trip to Vietnam. The island is known for its stunning beaches and vibrant atmosphere, making it a perfect getaway.

During my stay, I found a beautiful place called Valley Sen Bungalow, surrounded by lush forest and featuring lovely pools. The peaceful setting made it a wonderful place to unwind after my adventures.

1. Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park

My Trip to Phu Quoc, Vietnam

One of the highlights of my time in Phu Quoc was the cable car ride to Sun World, a fun water park located on Hon Thom Island. The views from the cable car are breathtaking, and it’s known as the longest cable car in the world. As you  soar above the trees and water, you can see the beautiful Sunset Town below.

At Sun World, I enjoyed all the exciting water rides, making it a great destination for families. Afterwards, I also visited the Kiss Bridge, which added to the fun. This bridge is famous for its unique design and offers perfect photo opportunities. I loved walking across it while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding area, creating an unforgettable day!

2. Three Island Speedboat Tour in Phu Quoc

Sea walking tour in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

During my time in Phu Quoc, I booked a Three Island Speedboat Tour through Booking.com. The tour included some great snorkeling opportunities, allowing us to explore the colorful underwater world. One unique activity offered was sea walking, which was really cool but came at an extra cost of $65 if you wanted pictures and a video of the experience.

If you tend to feel claustrophobic, I should warn you that sea walking might not be for you. At first, I panicked a bit when I put on the helmet, but I relaxed and managed to enjoy the experience.

However, this trip is definitely not for anyone prone to motion sickness, like me. I ended up feeling sick toward the end of the trip because we were on the water for too long. Despite that, the tour was a memorable experience with beautiful sights and fun activities. Just be prepared for the possibility of feeling a bit queasy if you’re sensitive to boat rides!

My Unforgettable Trip to Vietnam

My unforgettable trip to Vietnam

As I wrap up my trip to Vietnam on my last day, I can honestly say it has been the best two weeks of my journey so far. Despite the occasional rain, I’ve enjoyed every moment exploring this beautiful country. From the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the stunning beaches of Phu Quoc, each experience has been unforgettable. I can’t wait to discover what Cambodia has in store for me next!
