Deciding to join the Peace Corps is a significant step that shows my deep commitment to making a positive difference in the world. This decision comes from a mix of personal experiences, values, and a strong desire to contribute to global communities in meaningful ways. In this post, I’ll explain why I decided to join the Peace Corps, what inspired me, and what I hope to achieve through this adventure.
What is the Peace Corps?
The Peace Corps is a U.S. government initiative, established in 1961, aimed at promoting global peace and friendship. Consequently, this program recruits volunteers to serve in various countries across different continents. For example, volunteers work in Africa, Asia, and South America, where they tackle pressing community needs. Volunteers work on projects in areas like education, health, agriculture, and economic development.
Their work is designed to build lasting impact by supporting local efforts and fostering sustainable solutions. Volunteers live and integrate into the communities they serve, which helps to bridge cultural gaps and strengthen international understanding. Through their dedication and hands-on assistance, Peace Corps volunteers contribute to positive change. Additionally, they gain invaluable experiences and perspectives from their host countries.
My Path to Joining the Peace Corps
In 2020, after my divorce from my second husband, I found myself at a crossroads. I was semi-retired and my daughters were starting their college journeys. I was searching for a new direction in my life. That’s when I first decided to join the Peace Corps. I began the application process and submitted my resume, excited about the opportunity.
However, just as I was waiting for the next steps, the pandemic hit. The Peace Corps paused all international assignments, and everything came to a halt. During this time, my sister asked for my help to restructure her dental practice. I took on this challenge and spent the next two years assisting her business.
When it was time for me to move on from that role, I briefly worked for a law firm. Despite this, I felt a strong desire for a new adventure. In 2023, I decided to renew my focus and join the Peace Corps. I eagerly re-applied, ready to embrace the new chapter of my life that I had been looking forward to.
Why I Decided to Join the Peace Corps
Deciding to join the Peace Corps was a transformative choice. It was driven by a blend of personal experiences and a deep desire to make a positive impact. Here’s why this path became so important to me.
A New Chapter After Change
After years of managing my own business, I found myself yearning for a new direction in life. The routine of entrepreneurship, while rewarding, had begun to feel limiting. I was ready for a change, seeking opportunities that offered fresh experiences and personal growth.
This period of transition was an ideal moment for self-reflection. As a result, with my daughters in college and my life taking on a new rhythm, I felt a strong urge to explore paths beyond my previous work. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and immerse myself in new challenges and environments.
A Desire to Travel and Learn
One of my key motivations was a strong desire to travel and immerse myself in different cultures. Additionally, the Peace Corps offered a unique chance to experience new places and gain a deeper understanding of the world. I was excited about the possibility of living and working in diverse communities, learning about their traditions, and sharing my own experiences.
Seeking Meaningful Work
Beyond travel, I wanted to engage in work that was more meaningful and impactful. Furthermore, I aimed to use my skills to help others in need, contributing to projects that make a real difference. The Peace Corps’ mission to support community development and promote peace aligned perfectly with my goal to have a positive influence on people’s lives.
Why I Decided to Renew My Commitment to the Peace Corps
In 2023, after deciding to leave my previous job, I realized it was the perfect time to pursue my original goal. I decided to renew my commitment to join the Peace Corps, excited to start this new adventure and face the challenges it would bring. For me, joining the Peace Corps was not just a personal milestone but a meaningful way to travel, learn, and make a real difference in the world.
While many Peace Corps volunteers are in their twenties, I believe it’s never too late to pursue something meaningful. Therefore, I wanted to take action before I grew older, aiming to contribute positively to the lives of less fortunate people around the globe. I made this decision because I wanted to find purpose and make a difference while I still had the chance.
