During my amazing three weeks in Japan, my last stop was visiting Osaka. This vibrant city is renowned for its rich culture and delicious food. While I was there, I loved exploring beautiful temples and visiting the famous deer park in Nara. Each experience during my time visiting Osaka made my journey even more special and memorable.
Where I Stayed Visiting Osaka
During my stay in Osaka, I chose a nice hostel called The Stay Osaka Shinsaibashi. It was conveniently located about 15 minutes from the famous Tomdori River, making it easy to explore the city. The hostel was very clean and had a large common area where I could relax. One of my favorite features was the nice kitchen, where I could cook my own meals whenever I wanted.
Although I didn’t stay there, another popular option is Hotel Atarayo Osaka, which comes highly recommended by other travelers. If hostels aren’t your style, you’ll find many great hotels in the area as well. No matter where you choose to stay, Osaka offers plenty of comfortable accommodations to enhance your visit!
Getting Around Osaka
If you prefer smaller cities, visiting Osaka might be a bit overwhelming. As the third-largest city in Japan, it features tall buildings and lots of people. Most locals and tourists get around using public transportation, which is very convenient. There are many subway stations nearby, making it easy to navigate both the city and neighboring areas.
For example, it took me about an hour and a half to travel from the heart of Kyoto to Osaka. The subway ride from where I stayed in Osaka to Kansai Airport was just a little over an hour, which was super convenient!
In addition to the subway, there are many local buses and even Shinkansen bullet trains if you want to try them out. Just keep in mind that bullet trains can be a bit pricey, but they definitely get you to your destination much faster.
Many people in Osaka, including tourists, also ride bikes. Renting a bike is quite common and costs about $10-$15 a day. It’s a fun and quick way to explore the city while visiting Osaka!
Things to Do While Visiting Osaka
When visiting Osaka, there are several must-see attractions that you shouldn’t miss. Here’s a guide to some of the top highlights:
1. Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, the castle boasts a rich history that you can explore. You can walk around the castle grounds, and if you climb to the top, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the city. The entrance fee is 600 yen (about $4.05), making it an affordable spot for both photos and learning about Osaka’s past. It’s definitely a must-visit during your time in Osaka.
2. Kuromon Ichiba Market
Kuromon Ichiba Market is a vibrant and bustling food market located in Osaka. Known as the “Kitchen of Osaka,” this market offers a wide variety of fresh seafood, meats, fruits, and vegetables, as well as delicious street food stalls. Visitors can enjoy sampling local specialties, such as grilled seafood, takoyaki (octopus balls), and sweet treats. With its lively atmosphere and diverse offerings, Kuromon Ichiba Market is a must-visit destination for food lovers looking to experience the flavors of Osaka!
3. Tomdori River
Take a relaxing walk along the Tomdori River. This scenic river is lined with parks and lively streets, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. You can enjoy beautiful views, take pictures, and even watch street performers entertaining passersby. It’s a wonderful way to soak in the local culture.
4. Nara Park
Finally, visit Nara Park, where you can encounter the famous free-roaming deer. These friendly animals are used to visitors and will happily approach you for treats. It’s a fun place for nature and animal lovers, allowing you to enjoy beautiful scenery while getting up close to these gentle creatures. However, I recommend going early, as the park tends to get pretty crowded after 10 AM. Visiting early will give you a more peaceful experience as you stroll through this lovely park.
While you’re in Nara Park, don’t miss the chance to visit Todai-ji Temple, which is located within the park. This impressive temple is home to a giant Buddha statue and features stunning architecture. The peaceful atmosphere of Todai-ji Temple provides a perfect setting for reflection and admiration of this historical site. Together, Nara Park and Todai-ji Temple offer a memorable experience for anyone visiting Osaka.

From exploring the historic Osaka Castle to enjoying the lively atmosphere at Kuromon Ichiba Market, there is something for everyone.
