Trip to South Korea

Trip to South Korea

After traveling to Japan for 48 days, I took a trip to South Korea to reconnect with old friends and family. While there, I had the opportunity to explore some of the country’s most beautiful hikes, immersing myself in stunning landscapes and reflecting on the past. It was a trip filled with meaningful moments, where I not only reconnected with loved ones but also rediscovered the beauty of the places I once cherished.

Meaningful Trip to South Korea

After completing my Shikoku Pilgrimage, I decided to travel to South Korea to reconnect with friends and family.

I also wanted to revisit two mountains that hold a special place in my heart—Dobongsan and Bukhansan. These famous mountains are where I first discovered my passion for hiking and learned rock climbing many years ago.

Although I hadn’t planned to visit my uncle, who I hadn’t seen in over thirty years, I learned he was very ill and decided to make the trip to see him. It turned out to be a deeply emotional and special visit.

This trip to South Korea became a beautiful mix of rediscovering my love for hiking and nature, and reconnecting with some truly important people in my life.

Reconnecting with Old Friends

Meeting my old friends

Reuniting with my former students during my trip to South Korea became one of the most memorable moments of my journey. I had taught these individuals English many years ago and had planned to meet just one of them.

However, I was pleasantly surprised when two more students showed up, making the reunion even more meaningful. It turned out to be a truly special day as we reminisced about the past.

The reunion took an even more touching turn when one of my students invited me to stay with his family. This thoughtful gesture gave me a deeper insight into their lives. It was a beautiful reminder of the lasting bond we had formed all those years ago.

As we laughed, shared stories, and created new memories, I was reminded of how strong our connections remain over time. This reunion showed me the power of friendship and how lasting shared experiences can be.

A Memorable Trip to South Korea with My Cousin

During my recent trip to South Korea, one of the most meaningful parts was staying with my cousin near Seoul. Sharing a home again—even for a short time—added something truly special to our reunion.

My cousin, an avid hiker like me, was eager to take me back to our favorite mountains. Together, we hiked through stunning trails surrounded by the kind of natural beauty that only South Korea can offer. These moments reignited our shared love for the outdoors and reminded me of how adventure always brings people closer.

In between hikes, we wandered through the iconic Namdaemun and Dongdaemun Markets. These colorful places brought back childhood memories—especially when we stumbled upon old-school Korean snacks we used to love.

As we explored the lively stalls filled with handcrafted items and local treasures, we laughed, reminisced, and created brand new memories to carry forward.

This trip to South Korea wasn’t just about sightseeing. It was about reconnecting with family, reliving traditions, and feeling grounded in the culture that shaped us. I left with a heart full of gratitude and a deeper bond with my cousin.

A Heartfelt Visit with My Uncle

However, amidst the joy of reunion, my trip to South Korea also brought a moment of deep reflection. I had the chance to see my uncle again—someone I hadn’t seen in over thirty years.

But this long-awaited meeting wasn’t what I had imagined. It was hard to witness his frailty and the toll that age and illness had taken on him. He had once been full of energy and strength, and now, seeing him struggle stirred emotions I wasn’t fully prepared for.

This moment reminded me just how quickly time passes. Life is constantly changing, and the people we love won’t always be the same as we remember. During my trip to South Korea, that truth hit me in a way that was both sobering and powerful.

Even in the sadness, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude—for the chance to see him again and to sit with him. Sharing that quiet moment meant more than words could express.

It reminded me to never take time with family for granted. The bond we share doesn’t fade with time; if anything, it grows stronger.

Traveling to South Korea was truly special in so many ways. From reconnecting with old friends and family to revisiting beloved mountains that sparked my passion for hiking, every moment was filled with meaning. The reunion brought back cherished memories while also creating new ones, strengthening bonds that have lasted through the years.

My time spent with my cousin and the poignant visit to my uncle added layers of reflection, making this trip unforgettable. It was a journey that reminded me of the importance of family, friendship, and the preciousness of time.
