Lost Connections with My Grandmother

When I was a child, I didn’t feel comfortable around older people. I’m not sure why, but something about their presence made me uneasy. Maybe it was because they seemed so different from me, or perhaps I just didn’t know how to connect with them.

Three of my grandparents passed away before I was born, so I never got to know them. That left me with my maternal grandmother, but even then, I didn’t feel a bond with her.

One memory stands out clearly. She got upset when I refused to eat the food she made for me and my siblings. At the time, her cooking didn’t appeal to me, and I didn’t understand how much effort she put into preparing meals for us.

Looking back now, I regret not appreciating her more. I missed the chance to learn about her and build a connection. After we moved to the United States, she passed away. With her gone, I’m left with only faint memories and the regret of not trying harder to know her.

As I get older, I’ve come to see aging as more of a gift than something to fear. Wrinkles and grey hair are part of life, but they also remind me of how far I’ve come. My grandmother often comes to mind, and I regret not appreciating her more when I was younger. Now, I try to focus on staying active and healthy, which makes aging feel more positive.

My parents, now approaching their nineties, are a big inspiration. They live independently and stay active, even playing ping-pong every day. Their energy and resilience have shown me that aging can be about enjoying life and gaining wisdom, not just facing physical changes.

When I was in my twenties, I thought 50 was old. Now that I’m past that age, I realize how young it can feel. Thanks to advancements in health and technology, people today can live longer and age gracefully.
