South Korea Trip with My Daughters

Our first Trip to South Korea with my daughters

My visit to South Korea with my daughters was a dream come true. It was their first time experiencing the culture, food, and beautiful sights of this amazing country. We shared so many special moments on this trip, creating memories that will last a lifetime. From exploring historic landmarks to trying delicious Korean dishes, every day was an adventure we’ll always treasure. I’m excited to share the highlights of my unforgettable trip with my daughters to South Korea!

Trip to South Korea with My Daughters

In November 2016, I took my high school-aged daughters to South Korea for their first visit. My parents had been living in Pohang after spending over 40 years in the U.S. It was a chance for my daughters to experience Korean culture and see their grandparents. They were excited, and I looked forward to exploring South Korea together.

After moving to the U.S. at age 10, I returned to Seoul from 1990 to 1996 after college to work as an English teacher for major Korean companies. This time helped me reconnect with my roots and culture. It was also when I met my first husband. Though I planned a short stay, my marriage extended my time in Korea to six years before returning to the U.S.

My trip to South Korea with my daughters after 20 years was nostalgic and gave me the chance to see how much the country had changed since my time there.

Reconnecting with Family and Heritage

Traveling in South Korea with my daughters

During our two-week trip to South Korea, we stayed with my parents in Pohang, a charming city located in the southern part of the country. It was heartwarming to spend quality time with them, sharing meals, laughter, and stories. We visited several historic sites in the region, giving my daughters a glimpse of Korea’s rich history and culture.

A highlight of the trip was reconnecting with cousins I hadn’t seen in over thirty years. My daughters met distant relatives they had never known and listened to stories about my childhood adventures. Reuniting with my cousins and introducing my daughters to my family brought back fond memories and made the experience truly special.

Meeting extended family for the first time gave my daughters a deeper connection to their experience. They embraced the love, history, and warmth of family bonds, making this visit to South Korea one we will treasure forever.

Unforgettable Trip to Seoul, Korea

Special trip to Seoul, South Korea

When we arrived in Seoul, I was amazed by how much Korea had changed over the past 20 years. The advancements in public transportation, especially the train system, were impressive. Our trip from Pohang to Seoul, South Korea on the KTX bullet train was a bit expensive, but it was worth it for the fast travel time and great service.

Trip to DMZ in Seoul, South Korea

In Seoul, my daughters were fascinated by the lively streets filled with shops, restaurants, and street food vendors. The city was a mix of modern technology and amazing food, making it an exciting place to explore. With my cousin’s help, we visited historic palaces and even made a trip to the DMZ to learn more about South Korea’s unique political history.

Seoul is a busy and crowded city, which might not be for everyone, but if you enjoy the energy of a bustling place, it’s vibrant and full of life. Writing about it now makes me want to go back. During our visit, we also spent time with my cousin, relaxing at a jjimjilbang, a traditional Korean bathhouse, before heading home. It was an unforgettable experience!

Discovering Korean Cuisine

Hoteok in Korea

Rich in flavors and textures, Korean food offers something for everyone to enjoy. Street markets showcase tasty treats like sujebi, kalguksu, and hoteok (a sweet pancake with brown sugar and cinnamon). These snacks are affordable, delicious, and a must-try for anyone visiting Korea. The tempting smells alone are enough to draw you in!

Eating Live octopus in Seoul

If street food isn’t your thing, large malls have plenty of great dining options. You can find everything from fresh sushi and traditional Korean meals to sweet treats like tteok (rice cakes). Food courts in these malls offer something for every craving. For the adventurous, trying live octopus—eaten while still moving—is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Sujebi in Sout Korea

Korean food is also known for its healthy options, with a focus on vegetables and balanced meals. Vegans will find many plant-based dishes that are both flavorful and satisfying. Whether you’re looking for adventurous eats or comforting classics, Korean cuisine has something to please every taste.

Memorable Trip to South Korea

My trip to South Korea with my daughters was truly unforgettable. It was a journey filled with meaningful experiences, from reconnecting with family to exploring the vibrant culture. Traveling with my daughters made it even more special, as we shared moments that brought us closer together. South Korea’s unique blend of tradition and modernity left a lasting impression on all of us.

This trip not only gave us new memories to cherish but also deepened our appreciation for the beauty and history of Korea. We returned home with full hearts, already looking forward to our next adventure.
