Connecting with current and returned volunteers can provide valuable insights and help prepare your mindset for flexibility and resilience.
You can choose where you would like to serve, so I highly recommend having a few countries in mind. Initially, I was open to serving anywhere in the world, but after researching my first assignment in Mongolia, I realized the climate was too cold for me. I requested a reassignment, which delayed my application. Speak up if you have specific preferences or concerns about your assignment.
Creating Your Peace Corps Application
After completing your initial research and self-assessment, the next step in applying for the Peace Corps is to create your application. Start by creating an account on the Peace Corps application portal and filling out your personal details, uploading a tailored resume, and providing your health and legal history.
Write a compelling motivation statement and essays that highlight your skills and experiences with specific examples. Choose programs and regions that align with your skills, interests, and career goals.
Additionally, gather recommendations from individuals who can vouch for your qualifications and character. Before submitting, review all information to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Once you submit your application, respond promptly to any additional requests or interviews from the Peace Corps. By carefully completing each section, you enhance your chances of moving forward in the selection process.
The Interview Process
After submitting your Peace Corps application, the next step is the interview process. You will receive an invitation to schedule a virtual interview, allowing the Peace Corps to assess your readiness and suitability for service. This typically happens about 6 to 7 months before the departure date.
Preparation is key: review your application, practice common interview questions, and understand the Peace Corps’ mission. During the interview, be honest, highlight relevant experiences, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and show enthusiasm. Then, patiently wait for the decision, which may take several weeks.
Medical and Legal Clearance
After you successfully complete the interview process and receive an invitation, the next step in your Peace Corps application is to obtain medical clearance. This is the most time-consuming and stressful part of the process. It involves completing health forms, undergoing a comprehensive medical examination, immunizations and potentially providing additional information for a mental health assessment. The Peace Corps might instruct you to complete additional lab tests and other evaluations, so be sure to leave plenty of time to finish this part.
Simultaneously, the Peace Corps will conduct a legal clearance, including a thorough background check, to ensure you have no legal issues that could impact your service. This tends to be the easiest part of the process, assuming you have no concerns.
During my application, I struggled to get my health forms filled out because Kaiser’s policy prohibits filling out external forms. Instead, Kaiser provides its own forms, but these are not acceptable to the Peace Corps. Fortunately, I eventually found an instant urgent care office willing to complete the necessary forms. For me, this was one of the most frustrating parts of the process.
If you incur any medical costs, the Peace Corps will reimburse you. However, keep in mind that reimbursement can take 45 to 60 days. Therefore, prepare to cover these expenses upfront until you receive the reimbursement.
The most time-consuming and stressful part is definitely the medical clearance. After talking to other applicants, I found that delays in medical clearance are common. Many applicants experience medical clearance coming close to the departure date, so don’t be alarmed if this happens to you.
Final Steps: Staging & Pre-Departure Preparation
The final step in your Peace Corps application involves preparing for departure. Approximately 3-4 weeks before the departure date, you will receive your flight information.
You will be flown to Washington D.C. for a two-day staging event, which serves as an orientation to prepare for the journey. After this, you will fly to your assigned country to begin your assignments.
The Peace Corps will cover your travel costs, and upon arrival, you’ll undergo in-country orientation and training. Thorough preparation and organization will set you up for a successful and impactful Peace Corps service.
