Smoothies: My Healthy Daily Routine

When I first switched to a healthy plant-based diet over 8 years ago, smoothies became a big part of my daily routine. I relied on them for breakfast, and sometimes even had them for dinner or as a dessert after a meal. What I loved most was their versatility—you can throw in any fruits and vegetables you like to create a healthy, plant-based smoothie.

I got really creative with my smoothies during those first few years. One of my favorite things to make was smoothie bowls. These were like smoothie bowls topped with extra fruit, berries, and crunchy granola, turning them into a delicious and satisfying meal. Smoothies not only kept me energized throughout the day but also satisfied my cravings in a healthy way.

Benefits of Smoothies

Healthy Plant Smoothies

Plant-based smoothies are super healthy for a few important reasons. First, they’re packed with fruits and veggies, which are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These nutrients help keep our bodies strong and fight off illnesses.

Second, plant-based smoothies are great for digestion because they’re rich in fiber. Fiber helps keep our digestive system happy and can even help us feel full longer, which is awesome for managing our weight.

Another cool thing about plant-based smoothies is that they’re usually low in unhealthy fats and sugars. When you make them at home, you can control what goes in them, so they’re a healthier option compared to some other snacks or drinks.

Lastly, plant-based smoothies are easy to make and can be super tasty! You can mix and match different fruits and veggies to create all sorts of healthy flavors. Whether it’s for breakfast, a snack, or even a dessert, plant-based smoothies are a delicious and healthy way to add more goodness to your diet.

Healthy Plant-Based Smoothie Recipe

Serving: Makes 1 large or 2 smaller servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)
  • 1 ripe banana, frozen
  • 1/2 cup of frozen pineapple
  • cup fresh spinach or kale (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or any plant-based milk of your choice
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds or flaxseeds
  • 1/4 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1 small apple
  • 1 tsp of lemon or lime juice
  • 1 tsp of amla powder
  • 1 tablespoon nut butter (like almond or peanut butter) for added creaminess (optional)

Instructions

1. First, put all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, you might need to use a tamper to help it blend well. Keep blending until it’s thick and creamy.

2. If the mixture is too thick, add more almond milk or cold water gradually until you reach your desired consistency.

3. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed by adding a drizzle of maple syrup, or a few dates.

4. Pour into 1 large serving bowl or 2 smaller glasses.

5. Optionally, top with your favorite toppings such as granola, additional fruits, coconut flakes, or a sprinkle of chia seeds.

Easy Tips for Making Healthy Plant-Based Smoothies

Making healthy plant-based smoothies is all about creativity and personal preference. Here are some tips to help you create delicious and nutritious smoothies:

1. Vegetables

You can add any other vegetables you like, such as carrots, cucumbers, Swiss chard, or cilantro. Fresh vegetables add a vibrant taste and nutritional boost. For instance, cilantro can add a refreshing twist.

2. Fruit or Berries

Berries

Frozen fruits or berries, such as pineapples, give your smoothie a thicker texture, making it ideal for smoothie bowls. However, if you prefer a more liquid consistency, fresh fruits are a good alternative.

To achieve a thicker texture, freeze fruits like ripe bananas or berries beforehand. This keeps your smoothie creamy without diluting it. Purchasing frozen berries in bulk, like from Costco, is cost-effective and ensures you always have them available for smoothies.

3. Plant-Based Milk

Choose your favorite plant-based milk; I love homemade almond milk because it’s simple and tasty. While I’ve tried cashew and oat milk, almond milk is my top choice. It’s easy to make and great for things like oatmeal or just drinking. Additionally, after making almond milk, you can dehydrate the leftover pulp to use in granola.

4. Lemon or Lime Juice

Adding a splash of lemon or lime juice not only adds a tart flavor but also adds more vitamin C. This vitamin helps keep you healthy by supporting your immune system and overall well-being.

5. Amla Powder

Amla powder, made from Indian gooseberries, is packed with vitamin C, which helps your immune system, skin, and overall health. It’s also full of antioxidants that fight harmful substances in your body, possibly lowering your risk of getting sick.

Additionally, amla powder can improve digestion, hair, and skin health, and it supports your liver too. Adding it to your smoothies makes them even healthier and better for you.

6. Almond or Peanut Butter

For those seeking added protein and creaminess, almond or peanut butter can be included. However, personal preference plays a key role; omitting peanut butter is fine if it’s not to your taste.
