Fujikawaguchiko is a small town in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, located near the base of Mount Fuji. It’s about a two-hour trip from Tokyo, making it an easy and relaxing escape from the city. The town is famous for Lake Kawaguchiko, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Japan’s most iconic mountain.

Getting to and Around Fujikawaguchiko, Japan
I took an express bus from Tokyo to Fujikawaguchiko, which took about two hours because of traffic. The fare was around 2,200 yen (about $16 USD), making it an affordable way to travel.
Since there’s no subway in Fujikawaguchiko, the best way to get around is by local bus, walking, or renting a bike. The local sightseeing bus, known as the Fuji Five Lakes Sightseeing Bus (Retro Bus), is a convenient option that stops at popular spots around the area. If you prefer more flexibility, renting a bike is a great choice, with several rental shops available near the train and bus stations.
I also noticed that the weather in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, is much cooler than in Tokyo. In September, temperatures stay in the 60s and 70s (°F), which feels refreshing compared to the city’s warmth. It’s a good idea to bring a light jacket, especially if you plan to stay out in the evening.
Where to Stay in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan
I stayed at Toyoko Inn Fuji Kawaguchiko Ohashi, which is only a 15-minute walk from Kawaguchiko Station. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and they even offered free luggage lockers for travelers, which was a nice bonus.
The hotel also provides a free breakfast with both Western and Asian options, making it a convenient way to start the day. My room was clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed for a relaxing stay. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Fujikawaguchiko!
If you’re looking for a hostel, Dot Hostel is a popular option with great reviews. I originally planned to stay there, but my reservation was canceled without a clear reason. Luckily, I was able to book a room at Toyoko Inn, and it turned out to be a great experience.
For those visiting Fujikawaguchiko while traveling Japan, it’s a good idea to book your stay in advance, especially during peak seasons. Hotels and hostels can fill up quickly, and having a confirmed reservation will save you from last-minute stress.
Best Places to Eat
Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, has plenty of great places to eat, whether you’re looking for a full meal or a quick bite.One of my favorite restaurants is Hoto Tempura Wakana, which I found by chance on my first day. They serve delicious set meals for 2,300 yen (about $16 USD), making it a great value for the quality and portion size.
If you’re a sushi lover, don’t miss Shaw’s Sushi Bar, located right across from Kawaguchiko Station. Their sushi is always fresh, and the set meals come with an appetizer and dessert. A meal here costs about 3,500 yen (around $23 USD), and the portions are very satisfying.
Another must-visit spot is Kosaku Kawaguchiko, a famous restaurant known for its Hoto noodles—a local specialty. The restaurant is highly rated and has spacious traditional floor seating, making it a great place to enjoy an authentic Japanese meal.
If you’re in a hurry or just want something simple, there are several grocery stores in town where you can grab ready-to-eat meals, snacks, and drinks.
Activities to Enjoy
Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, offers a wide range of activities for visitors to enjoy. During my four days there, I had the chance to experience some of the best attractions and adventures this beautiful town has to offer.
1. Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
For amazing views of Mt. Fuji, take a ride on the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway. A ticket costs 1,000 yen (about $7 USD), making it an affordable way to see the stunning scenery from above. The ride gives you a unique view of the mountain and the surrounding landscape. This makes it perfect for taking great photos of your trip to Fujikawaguchiko, Japan.
If you prefer a more budget-friendly and active option, you can hike up and down for free instead of taking the ropeway. The hike is easy and takes about 45 minutes to an hour round trip. 3. Explore the Mt. Fuji Ice Cave in Aokigahara Forest
If you’re looking for an adventure, the Mt. Fuji Ice Cave Tour in Aokigahara Forest is a great choice. This guided tour costs 8,000 yen (about $56 USD) and takes you inside a natural ice cave. There, you can see unique rock formations and learn about the area’s geology.
Aokigahara Forest, also known as the Sea of Trees, is famous for its mystical atmosphere and dense greenery. The tour is a great way to explore the forest safely while discovering its hidden wonders. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing, as the cave stays cold all year round.

4. Arakurayama Sengen Park
If you love hiking, don’t miss Arakurayama Sengen Park in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan. The climb starts with a lot of steps, but the stunning view of Mt. Fuji on clear days makes it totally worth it!
At the top, you’ll find the famous Chureito Pagoda, one of the best spots for taking iconic Mt. Fuji photos. The view is especially beautiful in the spring, when cherry blossoms bloom, and in the fall, when colorful leaves cover the area.
If you want to hike further, there’s a well-maintained trail that leads to Goten Summit, offering even more breathtaking views. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and experience a peaceful side of Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, away from the crowds!
Fujikawaguchiko: A Peaceful Escape Worth Visiting
Fujikawaguchiko is such a beautiful place in Japan, and I only wish I had more time to explore it. From the breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji to the delicious local food, I enjoyed every moment of my visit. The town’s peaceful atmosphere and friendly locals made my experience even more special.
