Reconnecting with an old college friend has been one of the most unexpected and heartwarming experiences in my life. What started as a simple moment turned into something much deeper, bringing us closer than we had ever been before.
Over time, that connection grew into a true friendship—one built on shared memories, new experiences, and a deeper understanding of each other.
In this post, I’m sharing how we found our way back, the joy that came with it, and how our friendship became stronger than ever.
Challenges of Making Friends
Friendship felt like a distant dream during my early years in Richardson, Texas. As a shy and quiet child, most of my time was spent helping at my parents’ shop. After school, I went straight there and stayed until closing. Even weekends and holidays were the same, which left very little time to socialize or build friendships.
Because of this, I had very little interaction with other kids. Over time, I started to feel insecure, and connecting with others didn’t come easily. Even when I had the chance to socialize, it often felt uncomfortable and awkward.
Looking back now, I can see how those early experiences shaped me. I didn’t have close friends growing up—just a few acquaintances. I often felt alone and wished for someone I could truly talk to and trust. Throughout high school, I stayed away from dating and deeper friendships because my schedule and shyness made it hard to form meaningful connections.
Now, I realize how much those years made reconnecting with an old friend later in life even more meaningful.
Meeting Rosa in College
College marked a new chapter in my life. For the first time, I had the freedom to step outside my routine, meet new people, and experience life on my own. I truly hoped this would be the time I could build meaningful friendships.
During my freshman year at the University of Texas at Austin, I lived with my cousin since we were close in age. Even though we weren’t especially close growing up, it felt like a comfortable place to start.
It was in this new environment that I met Rosa.
We had seen each other before at local gatherings, but we had never really connected. This time felt different. Being in the same place, at the same stage in life, gave us the opportunity to get to know each other in a more meaningful way.
We quickly realized we had a lot in common. We were both born in Korea and raised in Dallas. At the same time, our personalities were very different.
I was quiet and reserved, while Rosa was outgoing and naturally drew people in. I admired how easily she connected with others. Over time, those differences didn’t separate us—they brought balance to our friendship and helped it grow.
Our Friendship Over the Years
As we spent more time together, our friendship naturally grew. Rosa often came by my cousin’s apartment, and little by little, we became closer. She had a way of making people feel comfortable. She never judged others and welcomed everyone with open arms. It was easy to see why so many people were drawn to her.
Because of that, I was introduced to her circle of friends, and my world slowly began to open up. As we went through college together, our bond continued to deepen. Over time, our differences didn’t matter as much. Instead, I felt accepted and supported in a way I hadn’t experienced before.
After graduation, life took us in different directions. Rosa moved to Baltimore, and I moved to California. With distance and busy schedules, it became harder to stay in touch.
Looking back, I realize how much I missed her during those years. I often wondered if I still held a place in her life and whether our friendship would last. Even so, she remained someone very special to me—someone I never truly forgot.
Reconnecting with My Old Friend, Rosa
After more than 25 years, a simple phone call helped bridge the gap between us. Rosa reached out with a warm invitation to meet in Las Vegas, and just like that, we were reconnecting with an old friend in a way that felt both familiar and new.
Seeing each other again was a joyful experience. We laughed, reminisced, and relived so many memories from our college days. Even after all those years, it felt like no time had passed.
Today, Rosa is still my best friend. Her lively and funny nature hasn’t changed, and I’m so grateful that some things in life remain the same.
As she begins a new chapter in her life, I look forward to being there for her, just as she was there for me during some of my most important years. She may not fully realize how much her friendship meant to me back then.
Now, as we move forward, our bond feels even stronger. Reconnecting with an old friend reminded me how meaningful true friendships can be. It’s something I deeply value, and a connection I will always cherish.
Value of a True Best Friend
Having a true best friend is rare. It’s a bond built through trust, shared experiences, and being there for each other through life’s ups and downs. A real friend understands you, supports you, and brings comfort in ways that are hard to put into words.
Finding that kind of connection isn’t always easy. It takes patience and a willingness to grow together. But when it does happen, it becomes one of the most meaningful parts of life.
For me, reconnecting with an old friend reminded me just how special that bond can be. What we have now feels even deeper than before, and I truly value it.
I feel incredibly lucky to have Rosa in my life. In a world full of acquaintances, a friendship like ours is something I will always cherish.
